ONE NIGHT WITH AN EARL by Jennifer Haymore (April 1, 2014; Forever Yours E-Novella; $1.99)

Beatrice Reece, Lady Fenwick, has retired from polite society. Everyone knows her late husband treated her abominably, and she simply cannot bear the whispers of the ton. But it's the night of London's premier masquerade ball-and Beatrice's one chance to revel in anonymity. She hopes no one will recognize her beneath her mask, not even the sinfully sexy stranger across the room who holds her captive in his gaze . . .

Andrew Sinclair would know beautiful Beatrice anywhere from the gentle sway of her hips, the richness of her hair, and the lushness of her body. When he asks her to dance, the attraction is instant and all-consuming. The only woman he's ever truly wanted is finally in his arms. But when the clock strikes twelve, will this one reckless night fade into the morning light?

One Night with an Earl Excerpt

He reached down and took her right hand in his own. He raised their hands as he slipped his other arm around her waist. She pressed her palm against the back of his shoulder and suppressed a shudder. They were so very close, in such an intimate position. She wanted more, wished she could press herself even closer to him. “I haven’t danced a waltz in a very long time,” she breathed.

In fact, though she had learned how to waltz, she had never officially danced one during her Season because waltzes were considered highly improper for young ladies.

“The waltz is my favorite dance,” he told her.

“Why is that?” she asked, thinking that if he was to keep holding her like this the whole way through, it might just become her favorite dance, too.

“I do not enjoy touching a great many people,” he said quietly, his glittering blue eyes locked on hers. His arm tightened around her. “I prefer to have my hands on just one woman at a time. And that woman happens to be you.”

It felt like the air in the room—already thin and difficult to breathe—was sucked away. For a moment, she felt light-headed, unable to speak. Then she managed, “But don’t you dance the other dances as well?”

“Yes, when it is necessary for me to do so.”

“Why, if you don’t like them?”

“Because it is expected. I have made a study of societal expectations. The study has allowed me to become quite skilled at meeting them, Persephone.”

And with that, the waltz began. It was a lively dance, and Mr. Bull took full advantage, his steps bold, his turns wide, causing her pleats to stretch open and her skirt to billow around her.

She held on tight and let him take her on the ride. She didn’t think about the steps—she didn’t need to. She learned quickly that she must allow her feet to move as they would, and as long as she did so, they fell into a natural, perfect synchronicity.

He took her into a wide, spinning arc, and she couldn’t help it. She laughed in delight. She couldn’t remember ever feeling so free.

He squeezed her hand very tight for a moment. “You have the sweetest laugh I’ve ever heard,” he said, gazing down at her.

Still smiling, she looked into his eyes as he spun her around yet again. “Thank you.”

“I believe you enjoy waltzing with me, Persephone.”

“I have not enjoyed anything so much in a very long time,” she admitted. “I wish…”They danced around a group of couples, steering clear of a flurry of colorful skirts.
“What do you wish?” he asked, his voice low.

“I fear this might be our only opportunity to dance a waltz,” she said. “And I wish that wasn’t the case.”

“I hope it isn’t the case,” he said.

“But it must be. Because I fear Persephone’s time here is limited.”

Soon enough, she’d need to leave the colorful rebirth of spring and return to the underworld. But it was true—something about being with this man felt like she was blossoming after a very, very long time spent underground. She loved that feeling…and she didn’t want it to end.

“My time is limited.” She gazed at him straight on. “But I intend to enjoy every second while it lasts.”

This time, his lips were easier to read, his smile slow and seductive, and his eyes narrowing the slightest bit through the sockets of the mask.

“And I intend to enjoy every moment with you.”

She felt so free. Spinning, turning, waltzing, a handsome man holding her as if she were his most cherished possession, her dress a cloud of blue linen around her, her heart soaring. Tonight, after living so long a prisoner, she was breaking free of the cage Fenwicke had built around her.

For the first time since long before his death two years ago, she felt free.

And until a person has been a prisoner, they never understand how truly sweet freedom can be.

Excerpt from FIRE INSIDE by Kristen Ashley

Hop came out of the bathroom to see Lanie on her feet on the other side of the bed, panties on, hands twisted behind her back putting her bra on. Again.

He didn’t say a word. He prowled to her, reached out an arm the second he was close, yanked her to him and fell to his back in the bed, taking her down with him.

“Hop—” she started, pushing her weight against his arms, but he slid her off him then wasted no time rolling over her and pinning her to his bed.

“Sleep,” he ordered when he caught her eyes in the weak dawn. “After rest, I’ll get coffee, we’ll juice up, then round four.”

She blinked and breathed, “Four?”

“Got lots more I want to do to you,” he informed her and watched her eyes go soft, sexier, then her teeth came out to graze her lush lower lip, also fucking sexy, and her arms slid around him.

But she asked, “What about Tack and Ty-Ty?”

“I’ll make sure the coast is clear,” he told her.

“But they’ll see my car,” she told him.

“I’ll move it,” he offered.

Her hand slid up his back, around his shoulder, and then to his neck where her thumb moved to stroke him.

Her touch was light but, fuck, it felt good. He’d never had a woman touch him in an unconscious way like that, just a touch, a stroke, giving something that meant nothing at the same time doing it without thinking about it meant everything.

Shit.

Complicated.

“This is just supposed to be one night,” she reminded him quietly, but he saw it in her eyes. She didn’t even try to hide it. She’d bitten off more than she could chew.

He had too and he was nowhere near done eating.

She was cute. She was sweet. She was hot. She was better than he expected and he’d expected her to be pretty fucking good. All that wrapped in a package that gorgeous?

Yeah.

He was nowhere near done eating.

“Change of plans. A night and a morning and, maybe, an afternoon and, possibly, another night,” he amended, and her eyes got softer as her hand slid up to cup his jaw.

“I have to work,” she told him.

“Call off,” he told her.

“I can’t. I own the joint.” She explained something he knew, that she ran her own advertising agency. “And things are a bit crazy.”

Things were always crazy for Lanie. The woman lived crazy. She thrived on it. If there wasn’t crazy, she stirred it up because she couldn’t breathe without it.

“Babe,” he pressed his body into hers, “told you, got more I want to do to you.”

Review: The Prosecutor by Adrienne Giordano

The Prosecutor
Title:  The Prosecutor
Author:  Adrienne Giordano
Publisher/Publication Date:  Harlequin Intrigue, February 18, 2014
Format/Source:  Paperback, Author
Genre:  Romantic Suspense

Book summary

Chicago assistant state's attorney Zac Hennings just got handed a political hot potato: keeping the convicted murderer in a high-profile case behind bars.  He's up against his most formidable—and alluring—adversary. First-year law student Emma Sinclair is passionately fighting to free her brother. But she needs the take-no-prisoners prosecutor's help.

Caught between attraction and letting a killer go free, Zac walks a tightrope. Until evidence surfaces that the real culprit's still out there.  With his career and Emma's life on the line, Zac races to right a terrible wrong. Refusing to back down, he'll bring a lawbreaker to justice--or die trying.

My Thoughts

Wow, I didn't see that ending coming! There was never a dull moment in The Prosecutor by Adrienne Giordano. It's a phenomenal romantic suspense novel that's heavy on suspense with just enough romance. There were so many twists and turns, and I was surprised to discover the truth behind Chelsea's murder. There was a well developed cast of characters. Including a family of lawyers who were pitted against each other on opposite sides of the argument for and against Brian's freedom. Giordano took the definition of a competitive family to a  whole new level with Zac, the prosecutor, tasked with making this case go away, and Penny, his sister,  as the defense attorney.  I loved Emma's unrelenting character who'd stop at nothing to get what she wanted as she found herself in one disturbing situation after another. As for Emma and Brian's mother, she was skillfully depicted as a woman broken from experiencing a series of disheartening events. And then there's that added element of the danger zone as chemistry between the defendant's sister and the prosecutor began to heat up. There were just so many twists, twisted characters, and boundaries crossed that the outcome was an absolute surprise.

So what's my final verdict regarding The Prosecutor? It's a page turner--a must read that will keep you in suspense until the very end. I am definitely looking forward to reading The Defender by Adrienne Giordano, which is scheduled to be released in June of 2014.

Format/Source: E-ARC, Publicist

About BLOOD CROWN: Androids have claimed power over what remains of the human race. They rule without remorse. They are the Mind and humans exist only to serve them.

But it wasn't always so.

Before the android uprising, select droids, called Servants, were pivotal in engineering a new human race with nanotechnology enhanced DNA. The Blood Crown theorum was to be humanity's crowning glory and the key to their survival in deep space.

But Serantha, Daughter of the West, was the last female to receive Gifts from her Servant and when the Mind mutinied, she was hidden away, and presumed dead.

Without Serantha there is no hope of the Blood Crown being realized so Nicolai, Son of the East, abandons his crown to join the rebel forces. He might not provide the future for his people he had once dreamed of, but he will not go down without a fight.

When Nicolai discovers Sera among a small compliment of kitchen staff, everything changes--but Sera's Gifts were never completed and she is ill-equipped to face a legion of androids determined to wipe her, and every other human, out of existence.

Their only hope is the Blood Crown--but even if Serantha and Nicolai can realize their potential it may be too late to save mankind.

Review

Blood Crown by Ali Cross presents the concept of androids developed to serve mankind, but revolt in an attempt to destroy mankind.

Although the latter part of the book was well-written, there were parts of the book that didn't sit well with me.  Blood Crown started out a little slow, but grew more interesting in the end. The execution of Serantha’s connection to the ship was entertaining; however, early on I found that the fight scenes lacked the detail essential to captivating me. Another aspect of the story I found troublesome was that the female servants were treated like sexual objects. In the beginning Serantha appeared to be a weak heroine. Yes, there were times when Serantha would fight back--which added excitement to the mix, but there were other times when she would do little to defend herself, which made her fall short of being a kick-ass heroine.

After the first 90 pages, the story improved as there was a greater focus on Serantha and Nicolai; and the war that was brewing between the humans and androids.  Actually the writing seemed stronger and the story grew more compelling during the second half of the book.

Overall, the story was okay after Serantha begins to realize her power and build upon her gifts.

TEASER

EXCERPT

He flashed her a sexy grin and stepped right back into her space. “I don’t want some chick. And you’re not that good at hiding your emotions, beautiful. You snapped on those nurses at lunch and ran out of my room so fast I barely had time to blink. Any particular reason why?” He trailed a finger down her cheek and over her lips. Instead of an answer, a whimper escaped her throat. A painful throbbing began between her thighs, intense and demanding.
His touch deepened the pain. Her policy was no dating people in her workplace. She certainly wasn’t going to date Van Ransom. He’d probably never taken a girl on a proper date in his life. But right now she didn’t care about any of that. She just wanted him to take her up against the back of the barn, hard and fast. She was a country girl at heart after all.
“Stella Jo, you going to answer? Or do I have torture it out of you?”
The way he said her name, the one she was used to hearing drop only from the lips of family members, made her shiver. She let her head loll back to rest on the wall behind her. “Do your worst. I’ve dealt with animals much bigger than you.”
Leaning in until his nose brushed hers, he let out a soft growl. “You sure as hell better be talking about horses, because if you’re talking about Dr. Dickhead or any other man who's put his hands on you in a way you didn’t want, they’re fucking dead.”
She grinned and winked at him. “Guess that’s for me to know, darlin’.” Her breath was still coming too fast, but she was gaining confidence. She was having as much of an effect on him as he was on her. A competitive streak she thought she’d buried rose to the surface. “Speaking of men putting their hands on me, if this is your brand of torture, I’m disappointed.”
Thrusting himself up against her, he growled again. “Baby, my brand of torture involves that riding crop you bent over to pick up. Matter of fact, it involves you being bent over also.”
An audible gasp of surprise escaped her. His threat pulled at something deep inside of her that she didn’t know was there. Something dark and terrifying that she knew she should feel dirty and ashamed of. But she didn’t. Because apparently he wasn’t the only one who was twisted like that.
“Surprised?” he asked with a knowing look in his eyes.
“That you know what a riding crop is? Yeah.” She forced herself to smirk at him so he wouldn't see that she was a trembling mess of desire.
