Book Summary

Violence.

I’m addicted to it. It’s how I feel alive. It’s the only thing that’s real any more.

And now I have to sit around and discuss it like it’s physics or calculus.

I can’t do it. I can’t pretend that it’s some sterile academic topic.

Violence isn’t sterile. It isn’t calm. It’s pulsing. It’s alive.

It’s my drug.

Until I met Abby, I never wanted anything beyond the next fight. Never considered that I might finally find a way back to the land of the living.

Now? Now I find myself dreaming of a woman with golden eyes.

But I can never be with her. Because I am not whole. And I never will be again.

But I cannot stay away. And loving her might finally be what breaks me.

My Thoughts

Break My Fall by Jessica Scott is an emotionally charged story with excellent character development. Josh and Abby’s story is written in first person with alternating point of views.  Although presenting a story in first person doesn’t always work for contemporary romance novels, Scott excelled at bringing real life issues into the story and Josh to life as he struggled with anger, rage, and dealing with life outside the military. Abby also had struggles of her own. She was presented as a character who thought she could fix everyone else’s problems and was captivated by the mystery behind Josh’s apparent inner turmoil. As a result of their life experiences, there was realistic tension between them. Their pasts had really shaped them and showed who they were as characters. Despite the fact that they both had their issues, they complemented each other well. And I simply loved how these characters transformed over time.

Overall, Break My Fall is an excellent read. I’d definitely recommend it to readers who are looking for a contemporary romance novel that’ll take you on an unforgettable emotional ride.

About SEE YOU AT SUNSET (Seashell Bay 3)

Instead, she's called back to her hometown of Seashell Bay to help with her family's struggling general store. It's a town where everyone knows everyone, and where one man could sink Holly's careful plans.

Deputy Sheriff Micah Lancaster has wanted Holly for as long as he can remember. He knows she has a life on the mainland-and a boyfriend-and that there's no real future with her. But now Holly is back and the attraction still flickers between them, a promise of something more. Their desire is stronger than any undertow . . . and once it pulls them under, it won't let go.

Excerpt

She opened her arms, waiting for Micah to give her one of his usual friendly hugs.
But she got something quite a bit different. He swept her into his embrace and held her tight against his brawny chest, one of his hands spread dangerously low, fingers brushing her butt, while the other hand stroked slowly down her spine. “We were damn good together tonight, weren’t we?” His voice was a low rumble that made her shiver. “At shuffleboard, I mean.”
Oh. My. God.
He wasn’t just talking about shuffleboard. And Lord above, did he feel good wrapped around her. Better than good—it felt like what she’d been wanting for a long time. If he tried to kiss her now, Holly wasn’t sure she could resist.
And that would lead to some very bad things, especially given his clear state of arousal.
She stretched up and gave his bristly cheek the briefest of pecks.
“We were the best,” she whispered. Then she wriggled a little to let Micah know she needed to break away.
She felt a sigh move through his body before he let her go. “I’ll be thinking about that,” he said. Then he turned and strode down the steps to his cruiser.

She felt a sigh move through his body before he let her go. “I’ll be thinking about that,” he said. Then he turned and strode down the steps to his cruiser.
Holly shut and locked the door. She sagged against it as she sucked in an unsteady breath. She would be thinking about it too, probably all night.

Review: The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard, #1)Title: The Lies of Locke Lamora
Author: Scott Lynch
Publisher/Publication Date: Del Rey, June 26, 2007
Genre: High Fantasy
Format/Source: Mass Market Paperback, Purchased

Goodreads     Amazon     Barnes & Noble     Book Depository

Synopsis from Goodreads....

The Thorn of Camorr is said to be an unbeatable swordsman, a master thief, a ghost that walks through walls. Half the city believes him to be a legendary champion of the poor. The other half believe him to be a foolish myth. Nobody has it quite right.

Slightly built, unlucky in love, and barely competent with a sword, Locke Lamora is, much to his annoyance, the fabled Thorn. He certainly didn't invite the rumors that swirl around his exploits, which are actually confidence games of the most intricate sort. And while Locke does indeed steal from the rich (who else, pray tell, would be worth stealing from?), the poor never see a penny of it. All of Locke's gains are strictly for himself and his tight-knit band of thieves, the Gentlemen Bastards.

Locke and company are con artists in an age where con artistry, as we understand it, is a new and unknown style of crime. The less attention anyone pays to them, the better! But a deadly mystery has begun to haunt the ancient city of Camorr, and a clandestine war is threatening to tear the city's underworld, the only home the Gentlemen Bastards have ever known, to bloody shreds. Caught up in a murderous game, Locke and his friends will find both their loyalty and their ingenuity tested to the breaking point as they struggle to stay alive...

My Thoughts:

This book has been on my radar for a long time. I purchased my copy a while ago but just never got around to reading it until recently. I am glad that I took the time to sit down and get to it because I’ve been missing out. It was absolutely fantastic from start to finish, with many characters that fell way into the morally gray area, but were well-developed. Plus, their story was downright interesting.

In short: Honesty takes a backseat in the world of The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch—especially when Locke was involved.

The title says it all. The book was about lies and a group of thieves who were about to pull off their biggest hit yet. Combined with a fantasy setting, well, the concept was just really cool and made for one heck of a story. Locke is one of my favorite characters, he makes mistakes, he's greedy, and he's just a downright unscrupulous character. The story revolves around him and his fellow partners in crime as they get wrapped up in the troubles plaguing Camorr’s seedy underworld.

The story was done so well that despite the length, it was full of action and tension mixed with the right amount of mystery. Oh, and not to forget the heist, that was good too. One of my favorite parts was the dynamic surrounding the sort-of-peace between the “Right People” and the ruling/wealthy class of Camorr. It was an interesting set-up. Another thing that this book does well is show how quickly situations can change—how even the best laid plans still have room for error.

At the end of the day, The Lies of Locke Lamora was a great fantasy novel and a new favorite. I still have some questions, so I definitely want to check out Red Seas Under Red Skies when I get the chance.

DEBT
By Rachel Dunning

Expected Release Date:
March 30, 2016

What’s it about?
The Debt Collector

I pay my debts, and I expect others to.
I was raised in the slums of London, I knew nothing of privilege. My father was murdered when I was seventeen. Morty figured my father's passing meant I would automatically take on dad's debts. I refused.
And I paid for that refusal.
So did my sister.
So now I fight. All I know how to do is fight. The best cash is in the states, so that's where I am now. A big fish called Vito came along offering me a "favor" when I arrived.
Another debt.
I paid for that one too.
I knew Kyla Hensley would be trouble when I met her. But I wanted her. I could see through the falsehood of her wannabe-slutty clothes and her sexy legs. So I chased her.
Besides, trouble is my middle name.
Kyla Hensley
I was brought up in privilege, but I lacked everything else. My father is a business tycoon who buys and sells and doesn't care who gets rolled over in the process.
I never knew my mother, and all I have of her is a photo with a note scrawled on the back in French saying "I'm sorry." The only Female Figure I had growing up is my dad's wife who is a bleach blond with seven boob jobs. We never bonded.
I drink. I party. I meet guys.
But I wasn't always like that.
I've had a string of lovers in the last few years, the worst and most recent of which was Vince Somerset. My best friend Vera was dating a guy called Rory Cansoom who is the opposite of Vince in so many ways, and yet so the same.
She and I hit the road for the summer, getting away from the two college psychos and just trying to have some fun.
But there's a funny thing about trouble, the more you run from it, the more it finds you.
Which is when I met the Debt Collector.
It was only supposed to be sex. He made that clear. I made that clear.
That's all it was supposed to be.
I never expected to fall in love. I never expected to fall so deeply, madly, uncomfortably in love with a man who is wrong, so wrong for me.
And yet...so unbelievably right.

~Kyla~
“Tell me for real,” I say. “Tell me what I didn’t guess about you.”
Logan doesn’t answer, and already I’m regretting the question. I know something hurt him, but who am I to ask him about it so soon? I’m breaking my rule, I want to know him, I want to know everything about him.
He shifts his arm so that my head is no longer resting on it, leans forward.
I did overstep it, but I don’t care. Maybe this is the last time I’ll ever see him again, and I want to get everything I can out of it, not only the sex I’ll demand later.
He looks down at his feet, then at me.
He inhales a deep breath, and then he says something to me that will forever change the way I think about the world. He tells me a story that puts my own life in perspective, and makes me question what I’ve held dear, and what’s really important in life.
He tells me about how he lost his father. And his mother.
And why he fights.
And why he continues to fight. And what he really sees when he’s in that cage, the hate, the fury, the pain.
By the end of it all, my world is shattered, the floor is shaking, I have no stability.
By the end of it, I know one thing, and I know it to my core, my very fiber. And I don’t care if it’s too soon, I believe in intuition, I believe in it more now than ever.
The thing I know is this:
I love this man. I love him irrevocably. I love him more than I’ve ever loved anyone.
And I know I will lose him.
I know it. More intuition.
But I love his very soul.

About Melissa Schroeder:

From an early age, USA Today Bestselling author Melissa Schroeder loved to read. First, it was the books her mother read to her including her two favorites, Winnie the Pooh and the Beatrix Potter books. She cut her preteen teeth on Trixie Belden and read and reviewed To Kill a Mockingbird in middle school. It wasn’t until she was in college that she tried to write her first stories, which were full of angst and pain, and really not that fun to read or write. After trying several different genres, she found romance in a Linda Howard book.

Since the publication of her first book in 2004, Melissa has had over fifty romances published. She writes in genres from historical suspense to modern day erotic romance to futuristics and paranormals. Along the way she has garnered an epic nomination, a multitude of reviewer’s recommended reads, over five Capa nods from TRS, fifteen nominations for AAD Bookies and regularly tops the bestseller lists on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. She made the USA Today Bestseller list for the first time in 2013.

Since she was a military brat, she vowed never to marry military. Alas, fate always has her way with mortals. Her husband just retired from the AF after 20 years, and together they have their own military brats, two girls, and two adopted dog daughters, and is happy she picks where they live now.

Excerpt 3

He's watching me. I want to step closer to him but I can't. I won't.
Because I'm not blind to the darkness in Mr. Douglas. It's there, just below the surface. Like a pot of water just before it boils.
The tension is back, now. A slow burning anger I should be getting as far away from as I possibly can.
"What?" I finally ask, needing something to break the spell between us.
"Why do you care why I got angry in class? You don’t even know my name.”
I narrow my eyes at him and open my mouth, then snap it closed, mirroring his earlier action. I didn't expect the question and I have no idea how to answer.
Because in reality, I don’t have an answer for why I’m standing here at the moment.
Damn it.
My brain finally latches onto the first thing I come up with
"Wookie life debt. Payback for you helping me the other night."
I try to leave then. Hoping that he’ll let me go and put all my curiosity away. For good.
"Hey." His voice tugs at me to stop.
I won't look at him now. Because I'm ashamed of what he'll see if he looks into my eyes.
And I can't stand the thought of him seeing the needful loneliness that has become my constant companion since Robert ripped my heart out and left it bleeding on the cobblestone sidewalk.
"What's your name?" His voice is low and quiet. Steady now. Almost calm.
I turn, unable to avoid looking at him now.
It dawns on me that no, I don't know his name.
I stand there for a moment, hesitant. The last time this happened, I fell too far, too fast.
This time will be different. Because I'm not going to make the same mistake twice.
It's like standing too close to an electrical current.
The simplicity of the question is deceptively benign.
I'm drawn to him in a way that is unhealthy and dangerous. He's already consuming my thoughts, drawing my attention away from the matter at hand and luring me down a dark corridor where only dark thoughts and whispered need twist together.
I hold up one hand, needing to break the spell or whatever is going on between us. My hand collides with his chest, and I am flush against the stark reminder of this man's strength and power and capability to do violence.
There's a small cut over his left eye, from the other night. Before the rational part of my brain kicks in, I brush my fingertips gently over the bruised and damaged skin.
He goes still beneath my touch. That full bottom lip opens a little. A tiny space, but I can feel the heat of his breath on my wrist.
His eyes are locked on mine. I'm trapped, unable to move. I'm not sure I want to. I'm furious for him but I'm frozen, burning where my fingers touch his skin.
I cannot move. Cannot look away.
"I'm Josh," he whispers. An answer to an unasked question.
