My Thoughts

Have you met the Spider, Gin? She is faithful to her friends, but has a heart of venom when dealing with her enemies.

Heart of Venom by Jennifer Estep is the 9th book in the Elemental Assassin series. Despite this being the ninth book in the series, this is a great introduction to Jennifer Estep’s work. I was unsure what to think about reading the series out of sequence, but I had no problems with following the storyline. There were detailed descriptions and just enough background information to keep me turning the pages. This book has piqued my interest and I am now looking forward to reading books 1-8. I would like to know how Gin, the spider transformed from being “soft” into a hated and feared elemental assassin.

The spider is a kick-ass assassin with a lot of people out to kill her. In Heart of Venom, Gin is up against Grimes & Hazel who are merciless fire elementals. Grimes kidnapped Sophia, and the Spider was determined to make Grimes pay for his crime. Every time I thought that I could sigh and that the action was beginning to fade, another unexpected event would occur.  There were moments when I thought that Gin was kind of weak for an elemental assassin as her adversaries had the upper hand. Yet, there were other times when she fought a good fight. I guess you can say there was a balance between Gin & her friends kicking butt and having their butts kicked, which made the story seem a little more realistic.

And Owen…His actions were admirable. If you’ve followed the series or even if you haven’t, you must read the book to find out about Owen.

From the well-written storyline to the edge of your seat action, this is one urban fantasy novel that you don’t want to miss. Although, I must warn you that this novel is not for the faint of heart.
Rating 4.5/5

I received an E-ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review, thank you.
