A Hiatus...

From the Reading on the Rocks Team

Things have gotten a little sparse around here again, but it's not without reason this time. As the title of the post suggests, we've got to take a break from blogging, because you know life sometimes gets in the way of things. It happens. Basically we're moving, and I don't mean the blog.  And with the move means soon we're going to have a lack of internet connection, and little time to read. I know we've got stuff to do, reviews to write, and so on, but this hiatus is pretty inevitable at this point. (Things moved along quicker than we thought.) But we'll be back up as soon as things are settled and more or less organized again. (Those books don't unpack themselves you know.) This is just to let you guys know that we're not quitting, or disappearing, but rather going on a hiatus for the time being, but don't fret we'll be back soon. I'll still post the occasional blitz or spotlight, but it should be a couples of weeks before we're back in action.

Book Tour, Excerpt & Giveaway: Journey to Faith (Journey #3) by Tina Klinesmith

Title: Journey to Faith (Journey #3) Author: Tina Klinesmith Genre: Christian Fiction/Romance Publication Date: April 15, 2014 Cover Designer: Allison Brennen Event Organized By: Literati Author Services, Inc.

~ Synopsis ~

Will love fail them when they need it most or will it restore their faith in what the future holds?

Modified Excerpt (From Declan's POV) ~

Declan watched the swirling mass of bodies as they pushed and pressed their way through the crowded hall. School in Ireland was never this cacophony of sound, pressing at the walls of your brain, threatening you with madness. It had been far more relaxed, as if the learning happened by accident rather than forcibly crammed amidst the noise reverberating all around. He just wanted to return home, where he could be closer to Alaina, or at least the memory of her.

The slam of flesh against metal narrowed his eyes as he looked through the crowd to where the noise had come from. It was farther than he’d thought but the mocking laughter of several athletes caught his attention.  He edged closer, ignoring the final warning bell signaling he would be late for class again.

Declan couldn’t see through the semicircle of male bodies but a shiver ran down his spine. He tried to tell himself to turn away. Whatever might be going on wasn’t his business and he didn’t want to cause any trouble his first week in yet another new school. Even as his mind warned him to turn away, his feet propelled him closer to the group.

He caught a glimpse of wavy dark hair and frightened golden eyes before the girl was pinned behind one of the guys.

“You should come home with me, Faith. We could have some fun. You’d enjoy it. I promise.”

Declan couldn’t hear her response but jumped backward with the rest of his friends when the guy stumbled backwards, grasping at his stomach and grunting. Declan looked up in time to see a petite girl, her eyes wide with fury yet tempered with fear. She almost looked surprised by the attack, yet he could also see pride. She wasn’t going to back down.

“Don’t take that from her, Raif!” yelled one of the guys on Declan’s left. He looked back at the girl, knowing this group of guys wasn’t about to rescue her.

Raif, lunged at her, grasping her wrists and pinning her to the locker with all of the weight behind his six-foot-plus frame. Declan knew he couldn’t let anything happen to this girl. Whoever she was, regardless of what she had done, no girl should be forced to deal with this sort of abuse.

He heard her back slam against the locker and winced as if feeling the pain himself. The group surrounding them closed in around the pair, like a pack of wolves moving in for a kill. Declan, standing in the back, jerked the nearest guy backwards and threw him to the ground before shoving past several others in an attempt to get closer to her.

“You can come willingly and we can both have fun, or we can do this the hard way. Either way, Faith, I’m going to have some fun with you,” Raif hissed, his mouth close to her ear before he sucked in a breath, his lips close to her neck.

Declan’s jaw clenched. He’d never seen a woman manhandled this way, never seen a girl attacked. Rage shot through him, lighting his blood on fire. He fisted his hands, every muscle in his broad chest flexing, preparing for battle as adrenaline rushed through his veins. He might not be as tall as this guy but he had sheer mass and anger working for him. He grasped the collar of Raif’s t-shirt, hearing the material give way as he jerked him backwards, throwing him into his crowd of friends.

“Hey!”

Raif launched himself from the floor, rushing Declan as his friends cheered him on. The air shot from Declan’s lungs as Raif hit his waist, circling his arms around him but he was no match for Declan’s fists as he brought one around the side of Raif and connected with his ribcage, breaking his hold. Raif fell backward again in surprise, giving Declan the opening he needed and quickly jabbed at Raif’s face, his knuckles connecting solidly. Blood immediately poured from Raif’s nose and Declan wondered if he might have broken it.

Raif moved to his knees and pressed himself from the floor of the school hallways. His friends fled in every direction, like cockroaches in sunlight. Raif pressed the heel of his hand against his lip and stared at the blood on his hand before pointing at Declan.

“This isn’t over.” He could see Raif trying to maintain any dignity he could salvage. “We’ll finish this later,” he threatened.

“No, we won’t. You touch my girlfriend again and I won’t let you off this lightly.”

Declan wasn’t sure what possessed him to call her his girlfriend when he didn’t even know her name but he wasn’t about to second-guess his instincts. He could hear her moving behind him as Raif skulked down the hall, glaring back at him. Declan turned to face her and reached for her arm as she slung her backpack over her shoulder.

“Are you alright?” She flinched, backing up against the lockers in an effort to avoid his touch. “Look, I’m sorry I told them you were my girlfriend, but I was hoping it would give them a bit more of a reason to leave you alone.” He lowered his voice and held out a hand. “I’m Declan.”

The girl eyed him, curiously, and shifted her backpack, moving her weight from one foot to the other. “Well, Declan, you might want to go wash that hand off,” she pointed at the blood on the back of his hand.

He glanced at it and frowned, unsure if it was his blood or Raif’s. He scrubbed his knuckles on the side of his jeans and folded his arms, staring down at her. She was so small and petite, he was worried if he shook her hand, he might break hers. She didn’t seem unfriendly but her defiant stance almost dared him to try and make her smile. He wanted to see if her eyes turned even more yellow when she laughed. He gave her a grin, hoping she would return the smile.

“Well, isn’t that a fine thank you?”

He could see her fighting the smile tugging at the corners of her mouth before she cocked her head and bit down on the edge of her lower lip. Her gaze grazed over him, from the top of his now messy mop of black hair over his turquoise t-shirt to the blood now on his jeans, as if she was appraising him. She frowned and he wondered what he’d done wrong.

“Now, what could make a girls as pretty as you frown like that?”

He played up his Irish accent, knowing girls couldn’t resist it. He saw the blush creep over her cheeks as her eyes widened in surprise. She clamped her lips together, forming a thin line and squared her shoulders. Instead of smiling, he saw her eyes harden like chips of topaz.

“Thank you for helping me out but I have to go.” She turned to leave as he reached for her arm.

“Did I do something to make you mad?” The ear-splitting sound of the final bell shattered the near silence of the now empty hall. He glanced toward the direction Raif had fled. “I’ll walk you to your class.”

“No need. I’m not going,” she answered.

Declan looked down at the girl, whose name he still didn’t know and wondered what in the world could have caused such a beautiful girl to try to hide. He could see it in the way she averted her eyes from his, or how she stepped backward, moving away from him, keeping a two-foot distance between them. She was odd but something in his heart tugged at him to find out more about her. He hadn’t felt this way in a long time. Not since…

Declan realized he hadn’t felt this way since his heart was broken, the day Alaina died.

EXCERPT

I’m going to have a baby,” Ivy declares as she stops directly in front of me. Well, her belly stopped directly in front of me, the rest of her soon follows.
Yes, indeed, my wife is definitely going to have a baby. Soon.
I’m getting ready—staring at the mirror as I mess with my tie, making sure it’s perfect—when she approaches me. I shoot her a grin, feeling good, feeling on top of my game. Life couldn’t get any better, you know? We’re celebrating today and with good reason.
“I know, sexy mama.” I turn away from the mirror and wink at her. “Trust me, I haven’t forgotten that I’m the one who knocked you up.”
She stares at me, no reaction to my wink or my words. She usually slaps my ass and kisses me. Says something sarcastic at the very least. But I’m getting nothing. And it’s kind of disconcerting. “Archer. I’m dead serious. I’m going to have the baby.”
“I know, babe. And I can’t freaking wait.” I study her, noticing that she looks a little pale and her pupils are dilated. Hmm. “You feeling okay?”
Rolling her eyes, she rests her hand on top of her protruding stomach, rubbing it absently. Then not so absently. As in, she’s clutching her belly like she’s in pain. “I’m in—” She sucks in a harsh breath, holding it for a few seconds. “—labor, damn it.”

Cover Reveal & Excerpt: Make it Count (A Bowler University Novel) by Megan Erickson

About the Book

MAKE IT COUNT (William Morrow Impulse, on sale June 3rd, 2014, e-book isbn: 9780062353399)

MAKE IT COUNT by Megan Erickson kicks off the lighthearted, funny, and sexy Bowler University series! Readers will love the fresh new series filled with laughter and lots of fun in this debut novel!

Kat Caruso wishes her brain had a return policy, or at least a complaint hot-line. The defective organ is constantly distracted, terrible at statistics, and absolutely flooded with inappropriate thoughts about her boyfriend's gorgeous best friend, Alec...who just so happens to be her brand new college math tutor. Who knew nerd was so hot?

Kat usually goes through tutors like she does boyfriends--both always seem to bail when they realize how hopeless she is. It's safer for her heart to keep everyone at arm's reach. But Alec is always stepping just a little too close.

Alec Stone should not be fantasizing about Kat. She's adorable, unbelievably witty, and completely off limits. He'd never stab his best friend in the back...

But when secrets are revealed, the lines of loyalty are blurred. To MAKE IT COUNT, Alec must learn messy human emotions can't be solved like a trigonometry function. And Kat has to trust Alec may be the first guy to want her for who she is, and not in spite of it.

MAKE IT COUNT Excerpt
Kat gathered her books and stuffed them into her plaid Burberry messenger bag, then headed toward the front doors, smoothie from the library snack shop in hand. Head bent, fiddling with the clasp of her bag, she stumbled into a wall of human on the pavement outside.
“Oh, I’m sorry—” Her voice dropped out when she realized the solid flesh belonged to Alec, Max’s best friend.
She’d only met him once or twice before he’d moved in with Max this semester and every time, he cocked his eyebrow with a half frown like he knew something she didn’t. Which he actually did, since he had brainy superpowers. Smarter than a speeding Einstein. Able to leap over C-minus students like her in a single bound.
She didn’t trust people that smart. And she didn’t trust a guy who didn’t ogle her ass or leer at her boobs like every other member of the straight male species on the planet.
Right now, that raised-eyebrow frown pinned her where she stood. His pale green eyes behind thick black frames roamed over her shoulder to the library and then back to her. With his pin-stripe button-down, dark jeans with Converse shoes and hair styled in a short, messy pompadour, he looked like a nerdy Elvis.
His frown morphed into a smile when he spotted the smoothie in her hand, and she definitely didn’t notice his full lips. “You know, you don’t have to venture into the forbidden zone just to get a smoothie.”
Oooh. The jerk. She glanced around surreptitiously, then leaned in and spoke in a low voice. “Just play it cool. Don’t let it slip someone like me snuck in the library.” She gripped his forearm and whispered. “Password today is rosebud.”
His face blanked and he looked at her like he’d never seen her before. Kat debated whether or not that was an improvement over his other look.
But then those intelligent eyes narrowed and a smirk curled his lips. “I know. We nerds get an e-mail every morning.”
See? He always needed the last word. She propped a hand on her hip and leaned in. “Well, sounds like you have a mole. Might want to look into that.”
He opened his mouth but she cut him off. “Just looking out for you guys. Anyway, see ya around!”
Before he could shoot back a snarky comeback, Kat skirted around him and bounded down the stairs. She chalked that up as Kat 1, Alec 0.

Out Of Mind Bonus Scene

Finn

This scene takes place a few weeks after the end of OUT OF TIME, but a couple of weeks before the beginning of OUT OF MIND.

I woke up slowly, blinking away the sunlight streaming through the hospital windows. I must have dozed off for a little while. By some miracle of miracles, I hadn’t had a nightmare. I usually did. Sighing, I reached out and pushed the morphine button on the machine next to me. My head and arm hurt like a fucking bitch.
The door opened, and I tensed. My last visitor had been Senator Wallington. He’d reminded me exactly how beneath his daughter I was, then left. Ya know, the usual. But this time? It was a most welcome visitor. Carrie’s red head peeked inside the hospital room.
“I’m awake,” I said, smiling and adjusting myself against the pillows. “Come in.”
She grinned at me and slipped through the crack of the door. “I came by earlier, but you were sleeping, so I went to the gift shop. Here. It’s for you.”
“Thank you.” I took the yellow rose she held out for me, not quite sure what I was supposed to do with a flower. I was a dude. We were supposed to be the one’s giving out the flowers—not the other way around. “I didn’t realize they made yellow roses.”
“They make them in every color imaginable,” she said, sitting down on the side of the bed gently. “You’re probably wondering why I got you a flower, right?”
I chuckled and stared down at the gentle bud. “Uh, yeah, kind of.”
“From what I’ve seen, roses are the toughest flowers out there. One year, my mother’s gardener planted the garden way too early. A frost came through, and it killed all the flowers outside.” She leaned in and touched the soft petal. “All of them except the roses. They were the only flowers that thrived, despite the cold and the frost. They had the biggest batch ever that year. And they were gorgeous.”
I swallowed hard. “Oh yeah?”
“Yeah.” She cupped my cheek. Her soft touch was so soothing and perfect that I closed my eyes and savored it. “And those roses remind me of you—of us. You are so strong, and I know it’ll be tough, but you’ll get through this, and you’ll be stronger because of it. I know it.”
My heart clenched. “We’ll get through this.” I squeezed her hand with my one good one. “Together, we can do anything.”
“Together,” she echoed, her eyes filled with tears that didn’t spill out. “I love you.”
“I love you, too, Ginger.”
I kissed her, my lips fleeting over hers. My grip tightened on her hand, and she strained to get closer. I drew in a ragged breath, my body responding to her closeness. Her tongue flicked over mine, making my stomach get tight and other things go hard. What I wouldn’t give to be out of this hospital room, and back in California with her in my apartment so I could take care of this need for her that was trying to kill me.
But we wouldn’t have privacy until I got out of this one in D.C., though, so we had a while to go. With that knowledge ringing in my head, I pulled away. “I can’t wait to go home.”
She sighed. “Me too. It’ll be here soon. We just have to get back to my parents house, then get through Christmas. Then things will go back to normal.”
Normal? Nothing about me was normal anymore. I was a fucking mess. But I smiled for her even though I knew it was a crock of shit. “Yeah. Normal.”
Her smile faltered, as if she saw through my façade, but she didn’t say anything. Her phone dinged. She didn’t pick it up. “We’re going to be okay,” she said again.
“Yeah, we will.” I hoped to hell we would, anyway. “Are you going to see who messaged you?”
“It’s just my daily inspirational message of the day.” She lifted a shoulder. “You know how I love those little messages.”
I ran my thumb over her lip. “I love that you love those little messages. It’s a-dork-able.”
She flushed. “Shut up.”
“Gladly.” I leaned in, the morphine making me feel high and kinda out of it. “Or you could shut me up.”
“Gladly,” she echoed, completely oblivious to the fact that I was a fucking wreck.
She kissed me, and I tried to stop thinking. Stop feeling.
To just stop it all.
