Blog Tour, Excerpt, Review & Giveaway: Undaunted (Knights in Black Leather) by Ronnie Douglas
Author:
Ronnie Douglas
Publisher/Publication
Date: William Morrow Paperbacks; September 15, 2015
Format/Source:
Paperback, ARC; Publisher
Synopsis
Being
fearless has never looked so good . . .
Aubrey Evans needs to get her life back on track after her father is indicted for embezzlement. All she has to do to hightail it out of small-town Tennessee is save up money for college tuition and steer clear of hard-muscled boys on motorcycles. Yet there's no ignoring someone like Zion. A knight in black leather, Zion looks like every bad idea she's been told to avoid, but she can't resist him. Whenever she's in trouble, he's there. Appealing as his rough exterior may be, it's the protective, principled man beneath who tempts her like crazy. Zion knows Aubrey doesn't intend to stick around. She claims to want only friendship, but he senses there's a naughty girl hiding on the inside—one whose intense desires match his own. For now, he'll be patient and play by her rules. But he knows it's just a matter of time before he weakens her resolve. As they join forces to figure out who's behind a local crime spree, it's clear that the danger goes deeper than Aubrey guessed. And when she needs someone tall, dark, and undaunted to keep her safe, Zion intends to be there—now and always.
My
Thoughts
Undaunted
by Ronnie Douglas is a sweet, smexy, and entertaining read. The characters
were well-developed, and I loved how many of the characters experienced
growth by the end. There was a love triangle in which Aubrey was pursued by
Zion and his cousin. Although Aubrey seemed confused about what she wanted at
first, her indecisiveness was understandable since she wasn’t seeking a
committed relationship. Douglas presented both the rugged and sensitive side
of Zion, and I loved the fact that he was willing to give up so much to win
Aubrey over. For Aubrey, some of the situations in her life—including those
involving her parents—were so out of control that she organized her life into
a neat and tidy plan. But Zion came about and then…Well, you won’t want to
miss how everything plays out as Aubrey deviates from the plan.

Douglas excerpt 1
When
Beau looked her way, she gestured toward a cluster of senior citizens. “Tell
the girls to meet me in the kitchen. Might as well have tea if we’re already
up.”
Then
my grandmother walked toward the bikers, who were leaning on their
motorcycles watching everything. They gave her the sort of look that made me
think that they were watching approaching royalty. It was a mix between
Southern gentlemanliness and the way a fighter acknowledges an equal.”
“If
I were the sheriff I’d be sweating like a hussy in the Good Lord’s house
right now,” Beau murmured from beside me.
When
I looked his way, my confusion must’ve been obvious because Beau added, “Miz
Maureen has influential friends. She doesn’t like to call on them, but she’s
about fed up waiting on the sheriff. That man couldn’t find his ass with both
hands and a map. Those boys there”—he nodded toward the street—“they get
things done. Maybe not the way the law likes, but they get results.”
“So
they’re not the ones doing this?”
Beau
laughed. “Echo would dip a man in honey and stake him out for the bears to
find if any one of them boys touched Miz Maureen.” Beau inclined his head
toward the bikers who were talking to her. “Your grandmother has the ear of
one of the most powerful men in the state. She doesn’t call on Echo for
anything, so people forget that she could do so.”
“Oh.”
“Not
a bad thing.” Beau patted my hand. “Eddie Echo would steal the stars out from
under the angels themselves if Miz Maureen so much as hinted that her yard
wasn’t bright enough.”
I
followed his gaze. I couldn’t make out many details about the two men
standing with my grandmother. They were both, obviously, riding Harleys. I
didn’t know enough about bikes to be more specific than that. One of the guys
lifted his gaze and looked my way. Dark hair brushed the edge of a black
leather jacket. Strong jaw, sharp cheekbones, and a mouth that looked made
for sin, he was the sort of contrast in beauty and danger that made me think
there had to be a trick of light. No man looked that good. Even as I argued
with my own perception, I could tell that he was near my age, fit, and held
himself with the kind of restrained energy that made sane girls look away and
unhappy girls want to step a bit closer. I told myself that I was sane, that
I was going to look away any moment now, that I didn’t want to find an excuse
to go check on Grandma Maureen.
I
was lying.
“Ask
your gran about Echo before you go staring at the likes of those boys,” Beau
paused and then added, “I’m going to head inside.”

Review: The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin
Title:The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms
Author: N.K. Jemisin
Publisher/Publication Date: Orbit, February 25, 2010
Genre: High Fantasy
Format/Source: Paperback (omnibus), Purchased
Goodreads Amazon Barnes & Noble Book Depository
Synopsis from Goodreads...
Yeine Darr is an outcast from the barbarian north. But when her mother dies under mysterious circumstances, she is summoned to the majestic city of Sky. There, to her shock, Yeine is named an heiress to the king. But the throne of the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is not easily won, and Yeine is thrust into a vicious power struggle...
My Thoughts:
The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin was everything I was expecting and more. It’s definitely one of the best books I’ve picked up this year, and a new all-time favorite right alongside Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson and the Martian by Andy Weir. And as far as high fantasy novels go, this one was excellent.
I have so much to say. So, where do I even begin with this one?
Let’s talk about the setting, which was definitely one of my favorite parts of The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. Sky’s description was kind of cool since there were essentially two cities that went by the same name, and were located in the exact same place. The only catch was that one was a palace that nearly floated above the other, only connected by an “impossibly thin column.” And it was in Sky—the palace—that the story primarily played out.
The POV was first person and set its focus entirely on Yeine Darre. I enjoyed the narrative style, because it was nice to read about the characters reaction from her point of view. The internal dialogue was something I found especially interesting to read as Yeine’s story unfolded. Overall, she remained a good character who had her flaws and struggles, but seeing how she dealt with them only added to the story. Dekarta Arameri was a character I disliked for…well, you know, reasons—just like many members of the Arameri family. I rooted for the main character so there wasn’t a single reason for my dislike, but stuff happened which added some tension to the novel. Oh, and there were gods/goddess—not much to say there because of the usual reason of potential spoilers.
The plot, while not the most fast-paced, was definitely one of my favorites. There were some political aspects combined with fantasy elements, which ultimately worked well together. So yeah, I absolutely loved The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. And because I have the omnibus edition with all three books, I will definitely be continuing on with this trilogy.

About UNEASY IN NEW ORLEANS
FINNIGAN JONES HAS A PASSION FOR COOKING AND A PECHANT FOR TROUBLE.
Dead bodies aren’t on Finn’s New Orleans walking tour of cemeteries and haunted houses. Ditto disappearing bodies. Now she has to explain to Detective Jack Boyle how her missing corpse has turned up in the Mississippi putting her smack-dab in the middle of a murder investigation.
Unfortunately, another of Finn’s odd jobs is taking questionable photos for Jack’s PI brother, Tommy. After she snaps shots of a dubious pair of lovebirds, they stalk her, then kidnap her. Now Finn’s dealing with two lunatics intent on killing her. Or driving her crazy. She’s not sure which.
Because lunatics and smokin’-hot brothers aren’t enough trouble, she’s gossiping, yes gossiping, with a chef ghost at culinary school, cat-sitting her aunt’s six felines and attempting to corral her wayward teenage sister.
All Finn wants is to survive school and become the best chef in the world.
FINN’S LIFE IS ABOUT TO GET EVEN MORE COMPLICATED.

Excerpt 1
Was that a dead body?
Drawing a ragged
breath, Finn Jones blinked hard to clear her vision.
She wanted to
blame her eyesight, the harsh sunlight or the glare off the asphalt pavement.
She even wanted
to blame her cheap, lousy-ass sunglasses. None of it worked.
She could still
see it.
Her heart sped
up. Perspiration trickled between her boobs. Gulping, she swallowed her dread.
In the midst of conducting a walking tour through the French Quarter with
eight, honest-to-God paying customers, she didn't dare let them know panic was
about to take her away like an alien abduction.
She darted a
glance in their direction. Busy talking about how hungry they were and whether
the hotdogs from the Lucky Dog vendor nearby were any good, they didn’t notice.
How could they
be so clueless? How could they not see it?
She'd seen dead
bodies before--in Uncle Ed’s funeral home.
Until now, she’d never seen one in its natural state. Those other
earthly remains had been dead for several days and embalmed. They were laid out
nice and neat, appropriate wax-like figures, in a satin-lined coffin at Big Ed
Finnigan’s Funeral Parlor and House of Rest.
Corralling her
meandering thoughts, Finn moved her sunglasses to the top of her head. She
closed her eyes, took a deep breath and then opened them again. Her throat
narrowed and she swallowed around a huge lump. From her position next to the
two-story building, he--and she was sure it was a man--looked pale, stiff and
decidedly dead. The body slumped across the gallery railing on the second story
of the converted apartment building, one arm dangling over the side. Dear. God. And this, after seeing a ghost in class earlier.
On a muggy
summer day when dead bodies had no business scaring the bejesus out of her, the
corpse draped above her head like Spanish moss looked nothing like any she'd
seen at a funeral.
