Witness to Passion by Naima Simone was a flaming page-turner—yes, it’s high on the heat meter. The beginning was unexpected, and it was at that point that I realized I was in too deep to set the book down. That was until my tablet ran out of battery power, but that's beside the point. Fallon went through witnessing a heinous crime, unemployment, and having a target on her back—just too much for one heroine to bear—hell, it was too much for me as the reader to bear. Fallon was too stubborn for her own good or safety--so not good. Although this was a fictional situation, I just felt so bad for the character and all of her sudden misfortunes and had to know how it would all play out. Shane was an alpha male that sought to protect Fallon, but he got a little sidetracked as the tension mounted and their feelings for one another came into play. Needless to say, they found themselves in some harrowing situations, which kept me glued to the pages until the very end. As for the ending it was shocking and it left me saying, “Whoa, plot twist!” Overall, Witness to Passion is a suspenseful page-turner with heart-pounding action that’ll take you on an emotional ride. It’s simply another enjoyable summer read. Rating 4/5 I received an e-arc of this book from the publisher/NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

MY THOUGHTS

Secrets and Sins: Chayot by Naima Simone is a novel filled with heated passion and chilling suspense. Surprisingly, this novel was better than I expected. Aslyn’s dismal situation was set-up early on—there was a psychopath in the shadows terrorizing her. The passionate moments were well-placed, never letting the reader lose sight of the mystery behind Aslyn’s stalker. In the beginning, Aslyn is attacked, and after she recovers she moves next to Chayot who has a dark past. Soon, she is faced with another stalker and there are no clear-cut clues as to who it is. As she's going through the ordeal with a stalker the second time around Chay is there to protect her—actually he was there for her in more ways than one. Some of the character depictions made me suspicious of who the culprit could be, but the answers to the mystery weren’t that obvious. I love how clues were added that caused me to make false assumptions about who the guilty party was. There were shocking twists along the way and the conclusion—well… Let me end by simply saying that Simone absolutely did a great job of keeping me engrossed in the story and oblivious of the outcome until the very end.

If you love romantic suspense novels with a high heat level and spine-tingling suspense, you’ll definitely want to read Secrets and Sins: Chayot.

ARC Review: Deadly Chemistry by Teri Anne Stanley

Laura Kane was happy having a secret crush on the hot maintenance man at Tucker University, but when the drug she was studying is stolen, Laura has a chance to get to know Mike in person. The problem is, he seems to know more about what's going on than any maintenance man should. But then the drug turns up in the wrong hands, and Mike and Laura have to decide if their own chemistry will help, or hinder, the race to save innocent lives.  My Thoughts Deadly Chemistry was an entertaining story, but it had its downfalls. I loved the beginning of the story. And throughout the book there was a nice balance of   humor, romance, and suspense. The way Lauren literally tumbled into Mike’s life was absolutely amusing. There was an instant connection. But things didn’t move too fast. And Stanley did a good job of incorporating work life balance issues, which contributed to Lauren’s fears of being in a relationship. One problem I had with the book was that the description of the African American Chief of Police Dwayne Crawford was stereotypical and lacking. It was assumed that he was around 30 years old with a height and lean power of someone who played basketball. There were a couple of other details, but it wasn’t enough information to allow me to really connect with the character. The description of the police chief just fell flat and didn’t compare to the descriptions of some of the other characters such as Lauren who was described as being tall, blond, and curvy. As for the elements of suspense, it was a slightly predictable. However, there were several characters that could have had a motive to distribute the Devil’s Dust, a deadly substance that was thought to be derived from Lauren’s experimental drug.    Although there were some aspects of Deadly Chemistry I disliked and it was somewhat predictable, the storyline was captivating enough to keep me reading until the end. Rating 3/5      I received a copy of Deadly Chemistry by Teri Anne Stanley from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

My Thoughts

 

I didn’t know what to expect from Written in the Stars, because this is the first book that I’ve read by Sherrill Bodine & Patricia Rosemoor. I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book. It was well-written and I liked the pacing. It had a nice balance of dark and mysterious elements. With every page I read, I was drawn deeper into the story of two souls destined to be together. Questions remained throughout the book regarding whether Cordelia would repeat the past mistakes of her ancestors or break the cycle of pain, heartache, and despair.  Both Morgan and Innis had likable and questionable characteristics so it was difficult to discern who had Cordelia’s best interest at heart. I don’t want to reveal too much about the characters or the plot, because it would spoil the book for people who haven’t read it. So if you’re curious and want to know how the story unfolds, I highly recommend reading Written in the Stars.

Sherrill Bodine is an author, fashionista, and world traveler. She has published 19 romance novels, co-wrote a comic book, and was a contributing columnist to the Chicago Sun-Times. She currently resides in Chicago where she frequents fashion shows and charity galas with her longtime Prince Charming.

While moving 22 times across the country and rearing her children with her husband, she sold stories to Fate Magazine, Home Life Magazine and True Confessions. A bit about Patricia Rosemoor
